Ellen Utschig

Ellen was first licensed in 1988 after taking classes at General Dynamics/Convair (N6DBJ made it so easy to learn about ham radio!) as a result of seeing how much fun her Dad (Bob, K6QJP - SK), and her brother (Joe, KM6EK) had with radio on a family vacation.  Other family hams are sister Katie - N6UWX, brother-in-law Lex - N6UWY, brother-in-law Mark - N0KII, sister-in-law Patti - KB6VGP, nephew Nick - KG6BWN, niece Emily - KF6MCB, cousin Michael - W5MJK.  Unfortunately, Ellen got her ham license shortly after she purchased a condominium (gotta love those CC&R's).  She worked 164 countries on 10 meters from there with a stealth, long-wire into a pine tree...not bad (for a girl!).  Ellen got into doing communications at off-road races down in Mexico, combining her love of the outdoors with camping and radio!  She met the man of her dreams (Wild Bill) through the off-road races and the rest is history.  The condo is rented out and Ellen & WB live together in Oceanside, CA, where the 130 ft. wire seems to be working well for HF work.  There's a 40' tower just waiting to get installed so watch out!  You gotta know WB's her "Mr. Right" - he bought her an Icom 706 MkII-G for Christmas!  Now he's licensed (WB6BFG) and together they have more fun than you can imagine doing public service comms in addition to their work at the off-road races.  When she's not off on another one of their infamous adventures, Ellen is employed at Costco (over 20 years!) and takes people's money as fast as she can and makes them think they enjoyed giving it to her.
